History Carlos Gracie opened the first Gracie Academy in 1925 in Brazil. A student of Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos refined the traditional techniques he learned under Maeda into a hybrid system we now know as Gracie Jiu-jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The fighting system became extremely popular in Brazil and later in the rest of the world as Gracie family members and their students migrated to different countries. The advent of the UFC had a huge impact on the popularity of the system as it showed the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-jitsu against larger opponents. Cesar Gracie became a legendary teacher of Gracie jiu-jitsu with his students enjoying success in the sport and combative arenas.
