At Toronto Aikido, we believe that the past defines our present. Our lineage is a direct thread that stretches from pre-World War II Japan to our modern mats in Toronto. We practice Yoshinkan Aikido, a style renowned for its precise techniques, robust physical conditioning, and focus on fundamental movements. Our Heritage: A Four-Part Journey To understand who we are today, we look back at the milestones that shaped our practice: In the Beginning – Early Aikido: Our roots trace back to the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (born 1883). His vision of a martial art focused on harmony and spiritual development laid the groundwork for everything we do. Yoshinkan Aikido – The Growing Years: In 1955, Gozo Shioda Sensei founded the Aikido Yoshinkan Foundation. Known for its structured and powerful approach, the "Yoshinkan" name was inherited from Shioda’s father, signaling a deep respect for tradition. Seimeikan Aikido – The Developing Years: Established in 1985 under Head Instructor Mitsugoro Karasawa, Seimeikan became a pillar of the International Yoshinkan Aikido Federation, bringing authentic instruction to our local community. Toronto Aikido (Shunpukan) – Continued Growth: When Karasawa Sensei retired in 2003, the dojo faced closure. However, the dedicated student body was determined to maintain the high level of training they had come to love. This passion birthed the Toronto Aikido Centre, ensuring our legacy continued uninterrupted. Our Leadership: Alan Shumak Sensei The heart of our dojo is our Chief Instructor, Alan Shumak Sensei (7th Dan). Alan Sensei’s journey began in 1991 under Karasawa Sensei. As the longest-training active student of the original Seimeikan dojo, he bridges the gap between our historical roots and our current practice. In 2003, with the full support of the senior student body, he stepped into the role of managing the dojo and preserving its culture. A Community Leader: Beyond the mat, Alan Sensei is deeply invested in youth development and community service, having served as a Scout Leader, Swim Official, and Youth Softball Coach. Today, Alan Sensei is present for nearly all classes, providing consistent, expert guidance to students of all levels. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, you are joining a community built on decades of discipline and a shared passion for the art of Aikido.
